517 S. Leithgow St. Philadelphia 215-925-5929 This hidden South Street restaurant recreates the setting in a Moroccan home, complete with vivid decor, an attentive waitstaff, and an overwhelming amount of food. Upon discovery of this cozy place, diners feel as though they have entered another country. The seven-course authentic Moroccan dinner is eaten with fingers; the dim lighting, incense, couches and ethnic music (belly dancers are available if you call ahead) enhance the foreign atmosphere; even the interesting manner the waiters serve has symbolic meaning. The dinner begins with a refreshing variety of salads, followed by a light filo pie called B'Stella, a simple appetizer, such as chicken with olives and lemons or grape leaves (for the vegetarians) and an entree of choice. . .the lamb with honey and almonds is delicate yet filling. After washing your hands in rosewater, waiters serve a large dish of couscous. Fruit and nuts continue the feast, and the meal culminates in a small slice of baklava and a strong glass of peppermint tea. Diners leave fully enlightened. Reservations are a must. Marrakesh mainly servers dinners (lunch by reservation), with a $20 prix fixe. No credit cards are accepted. --jen estaris Click for Directions - courtesy of maps.yahoo.com |
